Paulo Quintas (Ericeira, 1966) lives and works in Santa Rita, Torres Vedras. In 2009, he completed his Ph.D. in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. He also holds a Post-Graduate degree (2005) and a Bachelor's degree (1997), both in Painting, from the same institution. Across his various series, Quintas has explored registers such as Abstract Expressionism, landscape, signage, sign, geometry - all through highly diverse techniques, but always approached in a radically experimental and painterly manner.
His artistic journey is radically individual and impervious to trends. There's a rejection of interpretation and representation of the finished product. As he himself says: "My paintings are not banal, poor objects. They are always unfinished objects. Looking inward and looking outward is the same thing. I prefer art that makes me wander rather than represent." Radical and rebellious painting with a return to his primary gesture, before the "titles" that will name them are instituted.
Amongst the long list of his solo exhibitions, notable ones include: "Paulo Quintas: All Titles are Wrong", an anthological exhibition at Cordoaria Nacional, curated by Isabel Carlos (Lisbon, 2018); "Untitled", at the Museu Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Lisbon, 2016); "Abstract 1987-2015", at Espaço Concas, Centro de Artes (Caldas da Rainha, 2015); "Below Lies the Source", at Montanha Central, Museu Nacional de História Natural (Lisbon, 1995). His work is present in private collections in Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland, as well as in several institutional collections, such as Fundação PLMJ, BANIF MAIS, Culturgest, and Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual
